Background: Soviet swimmer dominated the world underwater championships which were held at Moscow's Olympiisky Sports Centre between August 26 and 29. Seventeen countries including East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Sweden and France, took part in the events. The home team set up 11 new world records, with each of the 12 Soviet swimmers collecting at least one gold medal. Foreign participants did not go home empty-handed. Anne-Marie Rouchon of France got four bronze medals, and about 100 national records were broken. Underwater swimming has been a national sport for about 25 years in the soviet Union, which holds all high speed underwater world records. The sport's popularity has lately been boosted by major technical improvements such as mono-flippers. Used in conjunction with aqualungs in the men's 100 metre race, they contributed to the setting up of a new world record by 18-year-old Alexei Zhukov, who won the race in 35.575 seconds. The six-time underwater champion set up five new world records. The women's 400 metre race was won in three minutes 31.83 seconds by Svetlana Uspenskaya, a 17-year-old newcomer from Kiev, who collected four gold medals and set up two world records.
