Background: At least eight people were wounded in a fresh outbreak of fighting between rival factions in South Lebanon on Tuesday (26 January). Gun battles raged in three villages near the Mediterranean port of Tyre between militiamen and the Shi'ite Moslem Organization Amal and both leftist Lebanese and Palestinian groups. Several houses were destroyed in the fighting at the village of Majdaya, thought to be an Amal stronghold. Buildings were also damaged by shelling in nearby Jouaya.

United Nations forces, who patrol the contested border area near the Israeli frontier, sealed off the three troubled villages. A UN armoured car, recently captured by Amal gunmen from Senegalese members of the peace-keeping force, was retained by UN units constructing the road blocks. Earlier this month, Shi'ite militants and leftist guerrillas fought several pitched battles in Beirut.
