Background: Greece's leaders were in Phaleron Bay on Sunday (6 July) to inspect the country's prime naval fleet...a move seen in many quarters as a show of strength at a time when relations with neighbouring Turkey are again reaching a critical stage. The two nations, already at loggerheads over Cyprus, also are in dispute over oil exploration rights in the Aegean Sea.

The greek President, Constantine Tsatsoos, Premier Constantine Karamanlis, Defence Minister Evangelos Averoff - Tositas, and other key ministers of the Government made the fleet inspection.

The Greek Government gave particular emphasis to this year's week dedicated to the navy.

Mr. Ave?/ff-Tositas denied reports that Greece had taken emergency measures in view of current Turkish air and naval manoeuvres in the Aegean. But many observers said that the presence of such naval strength in the area showed Greece was unwilling to be caught napping.
