Background: MEMORIAL SERVICES WERE HELD TODAY (TUESDAY, MARCH 11) FOR THE 57 MEN ABOARD THE FRENCH SUBMARINE "EURYDICE" WHEN IT EXPLODED AND SANK IN THE MEDITERRANEAN LAST WEDNESDAY (MARCH 4).

THE SERVICE WAS ATTENDED BY MADAME POMPIDOU, MONSIEUR CHABAN-DELMAS, THE FRENCH PRIME MINISTER DEBRE, MINISTER OF DEFENCE, AND OTHER MILITARY OFFICIALS. ALSO PRESENT WAS THE AMBASSADOR FROM PAKISTAN; AN OFFICER FROM PAKISTAN HAD BEEN ABOARD THE "EURYDICE" WHEN THE DISASTER OCCURRED. AFTER THE MILITARY CEREMONY AT THE SUBMARINE BASE IN TOULON, A RELIGIOUS CEREMONY WAS HELD AT THE PLACE D'ARMES.

THE "EURYDICE" WENT DOWN IN THE SAME AREA AS HER SISTER SHIP, "MINERVA" IN 1968. BOTH SUBMARINES ARE OF THE "DAPHNE" CLASS, INTENDED MAINLY FOR ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE. THE "EURDYICE" HAD BEEN ON HER WAY TO A ROUTINE EXERCISE AND HAD BEEN SAILING IN CALM SEAS AT THE TIME OF THE EXPLOSION.

TANKERS WHICH WERE IN THE AREA AT THE TIME WERE EXAMINED; ONE, THE TUNISIAN TANKER "TABARKA" BORE MARKS INDICATING A COLLISION WITH AN UNDERWATER OBJECT, BUT OFFICIALS SAID THERE WAS NO CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE THAT THE TWO SHIPS HAD COLLIDED.
