    Background: ZAGREB AND LJUBLJANA, YUGOSLAVIA

Armies of tiny ants have invaded thousands of homes in Yugoslavia. In Zagreb, it has been reported more than 70,000 flats have been invaded by Pharaon, or yellow ants. The capital, Belgrade, plus Ljubljana and Novi Sad are also unwitting hosts to this tiny menace. Public medical squads have been toiling almost without a break, spraying flats with special insecticides and insecticide varnish, but the task of eradication is daunting. When ants are reported in a flat, the medical squad have to spray every flat in the building -- which can be more than 100 separate dwellings. Pharaon ants multiply very quickly, especially in moderate temperatures and with access to plenty of food. These minute ants are about two millimetres longs, with queen ants about four millimetres long. They come out in armies, and mostly nest in modern centrally-heated flats. They are attracted by food rich in protein, gnawing away all the protein particles. Originally from Africa, the ants were first seen in Yugoslavia about 20 years ago.
