Background: JEWS FROM THROUGHOUT EUROPE GATHERED AT DACHAU, IN WEST GERMANY, TODAY, (SUNDAY) FOR A CEREMONY OF REMEMBRANCE ON THE SITE OF THE FORMER NAZI CONCENTRATION CAMP. MORE THAN 3,000 FORMER INMATES WHO MARCHED SLOWLY THROUGH THE GROUNDS HEARD SEVERAL SPEAKERS WARN OF THE DANGERS OF A NEO-NAZI RESURGENCE IN WEST GERMANY.

THE CULMINATION OF THE CEREMONY CAME WHEN AN URN FILLED WITH ASHES RECOVERED FROM MASS GRAVES IN THE CAMP'S CREMATORIUM YARD WAS BURIED. IT WAS CARRIED TO ITS RESTING PLACE BY FOUR MEN WEARING THE TATTERED PRISON GARB THEY HAD WORN 22 YEARS AGO.

EARLIER, A JEWISH MEMORIAL IN THE SHAPE OF A STONE DEATH-CELL WITH A CREMATORIUM CHIMNEY RISING FROM IT HAD BEEN CONSECRATED IN A SERVICE BEFORE 1,000 PEOPLE. IT STANDS NEXT TO PROTESTANT AND ROMAN CHAPELS ON THE SITE.

THE WARNINGS ON NEO-NAZISM CAME, AMONG OTHERS, FROM THE BAVARIAN DEPUTY PREMIER, ALOIS HUNDHAMMER, HIMSELF A FORMER INMATE OF THE CAMP, AND FROM THE BELGIAN PRESIDENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL DACHAU COMMITTEE, ALBERT GUERISSE. HUNDHAMMER CALLED ON THE BONN GOVERNMENT TO BE ALERT TO THE INCREASING NUMBER OF RIGHT-WING EXTREMISTS WHO WERE TRYING TO GAIN POLITICAL IMPORTANCE IN THE COUNTRY: GUERISSE SAID "THE PROGRAMME OF WEST GERMANY'S NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY BORROWED HEAVILY FROM THE FORMER NAZI PARTY.

THERE WERE FURTHER MEMORIAL CEREMONIES IN MAUTHAUSEN, AUSTRIA, WHERE 120,000 PEOPLE DIED BETWEEN 1938 AND 1945.

IN LONDON, JEWS COMMEMORATED THE TWENTY-FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UPRISING IN THE WARSAW GHETTO, AND HEARD SPEAKERS APPEAL TO THE UNITED NATIONS AND THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH FOR HELP IN OVERCOMING ANTI-SEMITISM.

IN JOHANNESBURG, DR. TERRY SCHNEIDER, PRESIDENT OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN JEWISH BOARD OF DEPUTIES, SAID JEWS IN SOUTH AFRICA WERE GRAVELY CONCERNED AT SIGNS OF RISING NAZISM. REFERRING APPARENTLY, TO RECENT GERMAN-JEWISH CLASHES IN JOHANNESBURG. HE TOLD THOUSANDS ATTENDING A REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY THAT THERE HAD RECENTLY BEEN BRAZEN AND UNASHAMED "RUMBLINGS OF NAZISM."
