Background: The President of the Falangist Party in Lebanon, Mr. Pierre Gemayel, told newsmen in Beirut on Monday (April 14) that undisciplined elements of the Palestinian Movement were responsible for the recent street fighting between the two groups.
At least 40 people have been killed in the fighting which began on Sunday in a Falangist stronghold. Several people were killed in other clashes.
Mr. Gemayel said he hoped both sides would stop the fighting which was doing great harm to Lebanon.
Asked whether he thought the heavily armed Falangist mi???, said to the five-thousand strong, contributed to stability in Lebanon, Mr. Gemayel said his party had been forced to arm itself. He said that many foreigners had entered lebanon illegally and the country had become a refuge for all that was irregular and outside the law.
