Background: Canada's national election campaign is nearing its climax with voters getting ready for polling day on October 30th, to elect a new Federal Government. The Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, and his Liberal Party are campaigning on their record over the past four years.
The leader of the Progressive Party, Robert Stanfield .... Opposition leader in the last house .... has been strongly condemning Canada's high rate of unemployment and the government's economic policies, while the New Democratic Party's leader, David Lewis, is attacking what he sees as heavy tax concessions to industry and is determined to gain a bigger percentage of the vote.
The Social Credit Party, which is concentrated in Quebec, is campaigning on a platform of monetary reform.
The Liberals held 147 seats in the last house ... the Progressive Conservatives 73 .... the New Democratic Party 25, and the Social Creditors 13. There were also three independent representatives and two vacancies. During this campaign candidates are making greater use of television, holding debates across the nation.
