Background: A Lioness had to be shot when fire swept the Belle-Vue Pleasure Park, Manchester, early today. At one time it was feared that all the lions and tigers in the menagerie might have to be shot as the flames drove them to near frenzy.
The fire, which was discovered at about 2am, followed a dance in one of Belle-Vue's several ballrooms. Thousands of poundsworth of damage was caused by the blaze which raged for six hours.
