Background: President Reagan, accusing the Soviet Union of supporting "brutal suppression" in Poland, warned Moscow on Sunday (31 January) that the United States was ready to act firmly if the situation in Poland continued to worsen. Mr. Reagan spoke on an American government sponsored television show, "Let Poland Be Poland", beamed by satellite to more than 50 countries and featuring a cast of world political leaders and Hollywood entertainers. Leaders from 14 other countries joined President Reagan in the 90-minute production, designed to show international support for Poland's suspended solidarity Union. The programme was denounced by both the Polish authorities and the Soviet Union as "propaganda, disgraceful, tragedy-farce, and a cheap show in the best Hollywood tradition". Of the 50 countries which accepted the broadcast 28 indicated they planned to show the programme in full. Only four countries transmitted the programme "live" as ti was being received by satellite.
