Background: The People's Republic of China has allowed a private travel operator in Hongkong to organise package tours inside China - and now the world's airlines and travel companies are clamouring for permission to operate within the People's Republic.

Mr Y.K. Lam is already running 18-day package tours including Canton Peking, Tientsin, Nanking and Shanghai at a cost of 300 American dollars. His client until now are all overseas Chinese, but the hopes to arrange tours for all nationalities before the end of the year. All the clients need is a visa. If the diplomatic rapprochement between the People's Republic of China and the West continues, Mr Lam could make a fortune from the many people fascinated by the Chinese culture. But the authority of the People's Republic of China insist that Mr Lam restrict his profit to 10 per cent per tourist.

SYNOPSIS: In Hong Kong, the thaw in relations between the People's Republic of China and the West is making itself felt. People on the Island colony are beginning to lock with more active interest at the Chinese mainland, and tourists in Hong Kong are hoping to extend their holiday into the Chinese People's Republic
Until now, people wanting to enter China had to pass through the "China Travel Service". But ow a enterprising Hong Kong businessman has jumped at the chance to fill the gap. From his small fifty floor office, Mr Lam arranges package holidays inside the Chinese People's Republic. Although he is a private businessman, he has the full cooperation of the authorities of the People's Republic. His 18-day trips include Canton, Peking, Tientsin, Nanking and Shanghai. All Mr Lam's client so far are overseas Chinese, but ??? hopes to arrange trips for all nationalities before the end of the year. All his clients need, is a visa.

At the moment, the nearest most tourists can get to the People's Republic of China is a lookout on top of a hill. One mile across the flooded paddy fields is China.

Busloads of China-watchers who cannot enter the People's Republic arrive daily at an ancient Chinese walled city in Hong Kong. It's one of the points of contact with Chinese people.

The Chinese People's Republic also has several gift shops in Hong Kong The tourists here can buy a wide range of Chinese goods - from cheap souvenirs to priceless porcelain, from cotton shirts to expensive lace tablecloths. PAUSE FIVE SECOND - 3 FEET. But in the future more end more tourists may be able buy their souvenirs in the People' Republic of China. The only reservation by the Chinese authority in allowing Mr Lam to arrange the package tours is that be should not make more than 10 per cant profit.
