Background: INTRODUCTION: West Germany crushed Finland 7-1 in their Group One World Cup qualifying tie in Bochum, West Germany, On Wednesday (23 September). The Germans with maximum points from their five games now need just two more from their final three matches to be certain of a place in Spain for the finals.
SYNOPSIS: West Germany playing in white scored first. In the eleventh minute Fischer finished off this movement to delight the 45,000 crowd.
Finland were very much in the match at this stage and replied through Turunen. The Finnish forward scored in the 40th minute.
But it was European Footballer of the Year, Karl-Heinz Rumenigge who set his seal on the match with a superb hat-trick. This breath-taking goal from an overhead kick showed just why he is rated so highly.
World Cup super-star Paul Breitner scored the first of his two in the 42nd minute.
And 18 minutes later he scored again to send the Finns deeper into despair.
Rummenigge scored twice more and Dremmler completed the route of the Finns with an 83rd minute goal. Rummenigge is seeking a world cup winner's medal to complete a unique treble of football honours. He won a European Cup Winners' Medal with Bayern Munich in 1976 and was a member of the West German squad which won the European Championship in Italy last year. After this display West Germany should to to Spain as favourites for the final.
