Background: Australian John Newcombe, new favourite for the men's singles event in the Wimbledon tennis championships, won through to the semi-finals today with a display of powerful tennis which disposed of fellow-Australian Ken Fletcher in exactly 80 minutes on the Centre Court.

It was an unexpectedly swift execution for Fletcher. In last year's championships, he had beaten Newcombe in the third round.

But today, Newcombe's power was too much for Fletcher, and he won in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

Newcombe now meets Yugoslave Nikki Pilic -- the man who beat favourite Roy Emerson -- in the semi-finals. The other semi-finalists are Britain's Roger Taylor and Wilhem Bungert of West Germany.
