Background: THOUSANDS OF HONG KONG PEOPLE CROSSED THE BORDER TO THE MAINLAND BEARING GIFTS TO THEIR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES ON THE OCCASION OF THIS YEAR'S CELEBRATIONS OF THE CHINESE NEW YEAR.

IT WAS EXPECTED TO BE THE BIGGEST MOVEMENT TO AND FROM THE MAINLAND EVER SEEN FOR NEW YEAR AND TRANSPORT AND CUSTOMS OFFICIALS ON BOTH SIDES HAD MADE ELABORATE ARRANGEMENTS TO COPE WITH THE CROWDS.

FOR WEEKS BEFORE NEW YEAR THERE WERE LONG QUEUES IN HONG KONG AS PEOPLE REGISTERED THE CONSIGNMENT OF GOODS THEY WISHED TO TAKE ACROSS THE BORDER. THE COMMUNISTS STIPULATED THAT EACH TRAVELLER FROM HONG KONG COULD CARRY NO MORE THAN 20 KILOS OF FOOD, WITH DUTY PAYABLE ON THE FIRST 10 KILOS. THOUSANDS PASSED THROUGH KOWLOON RAILWAY STATION AS THE NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS BEGAN AND TRAINS WERE RUNNING IN A SHUTTLE SERVICE. MANY TRAVELLERS WORE NEW CLOTH, NEW SHOES AND EVEN CARRIED FOOD IN BAGS OF NEW MATERIAL SO THAT THESE COULD BE LEFT WITH THEIR RELATIVES IN COMMUNIST CHINA BEFORE THEY RETURNED TO HONG KONG.
