    Background: United Nations Secretary-General, Mr. Kurt Waldheim has had talks in Egypt with President Anwar Sadat. Mr. Waldheim had already visited Syria, Lebanon and Israel when he arrived in Cairo, and told reporters that he was visiting the Middle East at a difficult time in the conflict. He said all efforts inside and outside the United Nations had failed to bring about a settlement and he was going to consult the Egyptian government on ways the U.N. would help to solve the problem.

    Mr. Waldheim was greeted an Saturday (September 1st) by the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Dr. Mohammed Hassan El-Zayyat. They then went on far two hours of talks with president Sadat. The talks were held behind closed doers, and no details of their discussions were announces. Mr. Waldheim made it clear at the beginning of his tour of the Middle East that he had no specific proposals to present.

    He was understood to have explained to the Egyptian leader his inadvertent reference in Israel on Friday (August 31st) to Jerusalem as the Israeli capital - something the United Nations has never accepted. Mr. Waldheim issued a statement reiterating the U.N.'s position on Jerusalem's status. He said it was not his intention to deviate from that position.
