Background: Rear Admiral Francisco Aleman, one-time head of the Argentine Navy's Intelligence, was kidnapped in his Buenos Aires flat on Monday (2 April). The Marxist 'People's Revolutionary Army' claimed responsibility and are holding him -- possibly as a bargaining counter for the safety of urban guerrillas held in prison. Outgoing President Alejandro Lanusse has personally visited the scene of the kidnapping. Also kidnapped on Monday was an American executive of the Kodak photographic company, Antonio Da Cruz -- although it is not clear who his captors are.

Sixteen guerrillas were shot dead by guards at Trelew Naval Base last year, and since then naval buildings and personnel have been a particular target of the guerrillas. A bomb exploded in the navy headquarters on March 30th.

Admiral Aleman, who retired last year as Under Secretary of State for the merchant fleet, was one of a group of naval officers who played a major part in the overthrow of President Juan Peron in 1955.
