Background: Reason for all the activity is that these young New Zealanders are about to attack a world record for the longest march by a women's pipe-band. This challenge to the ladies of Christchurch was accepted... and there to encourage them were the men-pipers of Christchurch, showing the way out of the city.

The task before them was the twelve miles record set by a women's Highland band in Canada. The New Zealanders were out not only to beat this -- but to do so before they even stopped for their first rest during the march.

By the time they stopped for this, the record was in fact already theirs. They'd already covered thirteen miles and were still confident of carrying on to Ashburtan fifty miles all told. So, refreshed and eager, they took to the road again.

For three weeks or so before the march, the girls had prepared by rubbing their feet with methylated spirits every day. Blisters finally forced them to give up -- but only after they'd marched nearly twenty-three miles and clinched a world record for Christchurch.
