Background: The first ambassador to Nigeria of the People's Republic of China presented his credentials to General Yakubu Gowon on tuesday (31 August). The two countries established diplomatic relations last February.
The Chinese Ambassador, Mr Yang Chi-liang, paid tribute to the "glorious tradition" of the Nigerian people in opposing imperialism and colonialism, and the Nigerian Government's continuous successes in safeguarding national independence and unity under General Gowon's leadership.
Replying, General Gowon said he was confident that the strengthening of friendly relations would contribute immensely to the new spirit in the Afro-Asian struggle for human dignity and a better life for the peoples of the two countries.
