Background: The world's largest oil tanker went into service on Wednesday (October 31), in a ceremony at Hiroshima's Kure Harbour. The 475,000-ton Globtik London set sail immediately after the dockside ceremony, bound for Saudi Arabia to take on oil for Japan.
On the same day, the Japanese oil industry announced it was preparing to restrict the sale of its products, in view of the cut in exports by Middle East oil producers.
The Nippon Oil Company, with a 17 per cent shares in the local oil market, said it would be tightening its supply of oil to distributors and the cut back would have an extensive impact on the production of steel, petrochemicals and electric power in Japan.
The Globtik London, together with her sister-ship, Globtik Tokyo, will supply Japan with at lest 12 million tons of crude oil a year, sailing between Saudi Arabia and Japan about once a month.
The tankers, built in Hiroshima by Ishikawa Heavy Industries, are owned by Globtk Tankers of London, but are under charter to the Japanese Nippon Petroleum Company.
In 1975, the Globtik London will be overshadowed by a 750,000 ton oil tanker that the Japanese have already begun to build.
