Background: Israeli aircraft bombed Damascus airport on Sunday (14 October) in another day of fierce fighting with Syria in the air, on the ground and at sea.
Damascus Radio claimed two more Israeli jets had been brought down by the Russian-supplied SAM missile defence system during the airport attack. A pall of black smoke was seen rising from the airport, fifteen miles from the city. It has been closed to commercial traffic.
A Syrian military spokesman said Syrian air defenses shot down "an enemy reconnaissance plans" flying high over the Abu-Shamat area on the Syrian-Jordanian-Iraqi border.
Syria claims to have brought down a total of 296 Israeli aircraft since the Middle East war started, but the scale of air activity dropped sharply over the weekend.
A United Nations observer in Damascus is reported as saying that Syria's missile system has been shooting down three out of five attacking Israeli aircraft. The observer, Major William Milinckrodt, of the Outch Air Force, said there were good grounds for believing Syria's claims.
One report said Syrian soldiers believed that a number of Israeli pilots brought down in last week's fighting, were still in the border mountains.
In Damascus itself, about five hundred people were reported killed and wounded in the first day's bombing by Israeli jets over the city.
