Background: Two people were killed and at least eleven injured, when a giant Caravelle jet airliner and a light plane collided in mid-air near Orly Airport, Paris, May 19, just before Soviet Premier Khrushchev was due to leave for East Berlin. The Caravelle was filmed on the tarmac after a safe landing, with a 7 ft gash in its fuselage.

The two planes were several thousand feet up at the time, and the pilot of the light aircraft was killed immediately. Its engine crashed into the Caravelle's fuselage, ripping open the roof of the airliner. One passenger was killed, others sustained serious injuries. Among the lightly injured was the wife of Jaques Soustelle, ex-Minister for the Sahara.

Fire trucks rushed out on the runway as the 'Air Algerie' Caravelle, which had been about to land when the collision occurred, limped in on one engine. The pilot brought it down 2 1/2 minutes after the crash. Later he told reporters: "Our two jet motors stopped immediately and I managed to restart them, but after a few more seconds one of the jets cut out again. Luckily the controls were still working." One of the three hostesses on board added: It is a miracle that we are still alive. We were saved only be the skill of the pilot."
Officials at Orly Airport said the control tower did not know the light plane - a Stampe training aircraft - was in the area when it gave the Caravelle pilot permission to land.
