Mrs. Meir said: "Mr. Secretary and your colleagues...I can say now, our colleagues on both sides, right? There is no doubt that this is a great evening - an evening that spells great efforts, a lot of soul searching and searching possibilities that may, some time ago, seemed to be impossible."

Dr. Kissinger replaying said: "Foreign policy usually deals with abstraction with nations and with military units and with borders. It isn't often that one can deal with subjects that involve individual experience of million of people where, as one deals with it, one can sense emotions and the hopes and the fears, and where one can believe that one has made a contribution. Thank you very much."

Background: The promise of a more peaceful future in the Middle East prompted an emotional scene in the office of departing Israeli Prime Minister, Mrs. Golda Meir on Wednesday (29 May). Dr. Henry Kissinger, United States Secretary of State and virtual miracle man of mediation; had listened to Mrs. Meir speak of his achievement in procuring a disengagement between Israeli and Syrian forces. He, too replied with emotion, then turned and kissed the first lady of Israeli politics on the cheek. Israeli leaders and members of Dr. Kissinger's staff roared with laughter as Mrs. Meir told the American diplomat: "I never thought you would kiss a woman."
Mrs. Meir's quip referred to recent photographs of Dr. Kissinger embracing Arab leaders.

Dr. Kissinger flew home to the United States via Cairo, Egypt on Thursday (29 May).
