This was one of the most impressive coverages I have made. The co-operation of the boys, their great respect for him, and his example in courage will long remain in my memory.

Background: Mr Berruti was a Geography master at Northlands Boys High school (Durban Natal South Africa) with sixteen years teaching experience, when he was struck down. Married, with three children, he was 40 years old when he caught polio in November 1955. He was left completely paralised. After five months he had recovered sufficient movement and strength to leave hospital, but had little hope of ever returning to work. He is nursed at home by his wife and continued with physiotherapeutic treatment, as an outpatient. After six months from the beginning of the illness he was pensioned off by the Natal Education Dept. The teachers of Natal together with parents and well wishers from Durban North contributed considerable aid to the family, both financial and otherwise. In Auhust 1956 he started with private coaching to give himself an interest in life. By August 1957 he was strong enough to make an attempt at class teaching. After two months trial he is re-engaged as full time teacher by the Natal Education Department, although he still unable to use hands or arms or walk.
