Background: IN THE UNITED STATES, A DEMONSTRATION OF A NEW PILOTLESS HELICOPTER WHICH IS ALREADY IN USE IN VIETNAM, WAS GIVEN TO OFFICERS OF THE US MARINE CORPS AT QUANTICO, IN VIRGINIA ON WEDNESDAY. THE DRONE HELICOPTER IS ALREADY REPORTED TO BE BEING USED IN VIETNAM BY THE US NAVY.

WITH LOSSES OF HELICOPTER PILOTS IN THE VIETNAM CONFLICT HIGH, THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF TRAINED PILOTS FOR THE AMERICANS, AND THE NEW DRONE HELICOPTER SHOULD PROVE THE ANSWER. IT IS ALSO MORE ECONOMICAL TO USE, AND CAN STAY AIRBORNE FOR FOUR HOURS.

REMOTE CONTROLS FOR THE DRONE CAN BE MOUNTED IN THE SACK OF A JEEP. THE DRONE HELICOPTER ITSELF CAN DO THE WORK OF ANY CONVENTIONAL CRAFT. IT CAN CARRY SUPPLIES AND DROP THEM TO TROOPS IN THE FIELD, LAY SMOKE SCREENS, AND TRANSPORT WOUNDED.

IN FLIGHT IT SENDS BACK TELEVISION PICTURES OF THE TERRAIN BELOW, AND TROOPS CONTROLLING THE DRONE CAN VIEW THEM IN SAFETY ON TELEVISION SCREENS ON THE GROUND.

SO FAR THE MARINE CORPS DOES NOT HAVE ANY OF THE CRAFT, BUT IT IS THOUGHT THAT ORDERS FOR THE LAND BASE VERSION WILL FOLLOW.
