Background: Turkey's tense Presidential election resumed on Friday morning (16 March), and adjourned again on Friday night. Once again, Parliament was no closer to finding a new Head of State.

Two more ballots in the parliamentary buildings in Ankara ended in deadlock, just like the previous four on Tuesday (13 March), and no candidate came close to reaching the victory target of 318 votes.

Military commanders watching closely from the galleries saw their nominees, General Faruk Gurler, badly defeated again in both ballots. He finished more than 100 votes behind Senate speaker Tekin Ariburun, who's being backed by the Conservative Justice Party, the largest group in parliament.

SYNOPSIS: In Ankara, Conservative Justice Party leader Suleyman Demirel made another trip to the ballot box on Friday in a new effort to break the deadlocked presidential elections, but again, he and the other candidates failed. The sixth ballot brought Parliament no closer to electing a new Head of State. A packed gallery watched the balloting which lasted all day.

Mr. Fsrruh Bozbeyli, Right Wing Democratic Party leader trailed behind in third place.

Ibrahim Elmali, a deputy added his vote to the ballot, but the picture didn't change. The military commanders' nominees, General Gurler, voted for the sixth time, but he was badly defeated.

After the two ballots, the votes showed that no candidate came near the target of 318 votes, and the elections were adjourned until ballot seven on Monday.
