Background: At the Vitebsk Sports School, girls of all ages are able to train as gymnasts with the help and example of two of the Soviet Union's most noted gymnasts. Vikentii Smitievich Dmitriev, a Merited Coach of the Soviet Union, has had a distinguished career as a gymnastic tutor at the school. It was at Vitebsk that he trained 18-year-old European Champion, Tarmara Lazakovich, who enjoyed considerable success at the Munich Olympics.....as a member of the USSR team which won the Team Event, and placed third in the Combined Individual and Floor Exercise events, and second on the Beam. With these two eminent gymnasts on hand to train and advise them, many young girls are showing considerable promise. The Vitebsk School is hoping to enjoy further international success in future gymnastic events. This coverage was supplied by Soviet Television.
SYNOPSIS: Vikentii Dmitriev, a Merited Coach of the Soviet Union, and one of the country's most noted gymnastic tutors, trains young girls of all ages at the Vitebsk Sports School. Among his successful pupils is 18-year-old Tamara Lazakovich the European champion ad a winner of the several models at the Munich Olympics. Training sessions at the School attract keen spectators.
With Vikentii Dmitiev on hand to train and guide them, and the inspiration of Tamara Lazakovich's achievements, many of the young girls are showing considerable promise.
The pupils are taught that only hard work and persistence can help them follow in the footsteps of former Soviet gymnastic stars.
For many years Soviet women gymnasts have dominated the beam and parallel bar exercises in international competition.....training methods have therefor developed from long experience and much success. Some of the pupils have attended the Vitebsk Sports School since very early school-age, and face many years of hard training and competition before being considered supple enough and sufficiently skilled for international competition. The brightest pupils are usually ready by their mid-teens.
