    TRANSCRIPT

INTERVIEWER: "MR. VINES WHAT ARE THE MAIN LINES OF RESEARCH TO BE PURSUED AT THIS NEW TECHNICAL CENTRE?"

MR. VINES: "WELL THIS TECHNICAL CENTRE IS ESSENTIALLY A PLACE WHERE WHAT IS COMMONLY CALLED APPLIED RESEARCH WILL BE CARRIED OUT. IN OTHER WORDS THERE WILL BE NO FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH WORK DONE AT ALL IN THIS, IN THESE PREMISES. WHAT WILL HAPPEN HERE IS THAT THE RESULTS OF FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD WILL FLOW INTO HERE AND THE PEOPLE HERE ARE PEOPLE WHO ARE CLOSE TO THE INDUSTRY AND THEIR JOB IS TO TAKE THESE NEW IDEAS - THIS BREAKTHROUGH PERHAPS - AND CONVERT THEM INTO PRODUCTS WHICH ARE COMMERCIALLY VIABLE AND WHICH HAVE COMMERCIAL VALUE. THIS IS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF IT"

INTERVIEWER: "MR. VINES THIS IS RATHER AN IMPRESSIVE MODEL WE HAVE HERE - PERHAPS YOU COULD SHOW US WHAT EXACTLY THE DIFFERENT BUILDINGS ARE ON THE SITE."

MR. VINES: "WELL, IT IS. WE'VE PUT A LOT OF EFFORT INTO THE PLANNING OF THIS. WE'VE LOOKED AT MODERN LABORATORIES AND PILOT PLANTS ALL OVER THE WORLD REALLY TO DRAW THE BEST IDEAS I SETTING THIS UP. IT'S A FIVE ACRE SITE - IT'S IN ILKLEY WHICH IS RIGHT IN THE CENTRE OF THE NEW TEXTILE REGION OF YORKSHIRE. THE BUILDINGS... THIS LARGE ONE HERE IS A LECTURE THEATRE AND AN ENTRANCE AND THIS BUILDING IS ALL LABORATORIES, ABOUT 40,000 SQUARE FEET WITH ANCILLIARY EQUIPMENT. THIS BUILDING AT THE BACK WHICH LOOKS LIKE A FACTORY IS IN FACT A FACTORY. IT'S WHAT WE CALL A PILOT PLANT, AND INSIDE THERE WE HAVE MACHINERY WHICH IS CAPABLE OF DOING ALL THE VARIOUS PROCESSES THAT GOES ON IN WOOL FROM HE RAW WOOL STATE TO THE FINISHED GARMENTS. IN THAT WILL BE A NUMBER OF NEW TYPES OF EQUIPMENT, ALSO EQUIPMENT WHICH WE ARE DEVELOPING OURSELVES. SOME INVENTIONS MADE IN C.S.I.R.O. AND OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD. THESE BUILDINGS OVER HERE ARE CANTEEN AND OTHER ANCILLIARY BUILDING THAT GENERALLY GO WITH THE SITE. THE WHOLE IS FIVE ACRES. WE HAVE ROOM FOR JUST ABOUT A HUNDRED PER CENT EXPANSION AND WE THINK THIS WILL TAKE CARE OF OUR APPLIED RESEARCH NEEDS FOR AS FAR AHEAD AS WE CAN SEE."

INTERVIEWER: "MR. VINES, THANK YOU VERY MUCH".

Background: FUNDS WORTH GBP1 MILLION SUPPLIED BY A WOOL GROWER'S LEVY IN AUSTRALIA, NEW ZEALAND AND SOUTH AFRICA WILL BE USED TO BUILD A WOOL RESEARCH CENTRE IN YORKSHIRE, THE HEART OF THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY.

WORK BEING ON THE CENTRE IN JUNE AND THE INTERNATIONAL WOOL SECRETARIAT, OVERSEEING THE PROJECT, SAY RESEARCH WILL START THERE EARLY IN 1968.

THE CENTRE IS TO GO UP AT ILKLEY, NEAR BRADFORD, CLOSE TO HARD-WON EUROPEAN MARKETS. MUCH OF THE RESEARCH WILL DEAL WITH THE PROBLEMS OF SHRINKING AND OTHER ALLIED TROUBLES LIKE CREASING AND WRINKLES.

THE TECHNIQUES OF IMPROVING COLOUR FAST DYES WILL ALSO BE STUDIED. THE GROWER COUNTRIES, THROUGH THE COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION, WILL SUPPLY THE CENTRE WITH THE RESULTS OF THEIR OWN BASIC RESEARCH ON WOOL, AND THIS WILL BE DEVELOPED AT ILKLEY.

IT WILL HAVE ITS OWN MILL WHERE WOOL WILL BE EXAMINED FROM HE RAW STATE, THROUGH ALL THE STAGES OF SCOURING AND SPINNING TO WEAVING AND THE FINISHED GARMENT. THE OTHER MAIN WORK AT THE CENTRE WILL INVOLVE THE DESIGNING AND MAKING OF IMPROVED PIECES OF EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY FOR THE INDUSTRY.

A MODEL OF THE CENTRE IS ON VIEW AT THE OFFICES OF THE INTERNATIONAL WOOL SECRETARIAT IN LONDON. THE MANAGING DIRECTOR, MR. WILLIAM VINES, AN AUSTRALIA, SPOKE TO OUR REPORTER ABOUT IT:
