Background: Jan Hoffman of East Germany crowned a twelve-year international figure skating career on Thursday (13 March) by winning the men's title at the world championships at Dortmund, West Germany. European and Olympic champion, Robin Cousins of Britain took second place while Charles Tickner of the United States was third.

SYNOPSIS: Hoffman, the 24 year old medical student, won the gold medal with what was described as probably the best all-round performance of his career. Despite a comfortable lead, Hoffman did not decide to skate safely. His jumps were high and he injected more style than usual.

Hoffman's performance left no room for Cousins to win, but the Briton made a superb attempt anyway. His performance has been described as absolutely stunning and his best ever.

Despite two perfect marks, Cousins paid dearly for a fall in the short programme on Wednesday (12 March). Hoffman has now announced his retirement to a medical career and Cousins is negotiating a professional contract.
