Background: In bad weather conditions, a new Super Convair aircraft of the Cruzeiro do Sul line crashed into a tree near Curitiba airport, killing 21 of the 27 people on board. Those dead included former Vice-President of Brazil, Sen. Nereu Ramos (70), Governor of Santa Catarina state, Jorge Lacerda, and Chamber of Deputies member Leoberto Leal. All four members of the aircraft's crew lost their lives. In spite of the tremendous impact of the crash, however, which broke the plane up completely, six passengers were thrown clear and escaped with injuries.
President Kubitshek ordered a five-day official mourning for Brazil after the crash. He carried the coffin, along with Vice-President Goulart and other distinguished bearers, when Sen. Ramos's body was taken in state to Rio's Palace of the Senate.
Sen. Ramos acted as President of Brazil on various occasions when head of the country Gaspar Dutra went abroad in 1946 and 1947. He was also Acting President from November, 1955, to January 1, 1956, after a military coup and later turned the government over to President Kubitshek.
