Background: Nostalgic moment on Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery's farewell tour of Germany came yesterday when he revisited Luneburg Heath. Here, on Victory Hill, he accepted the unconditional surrender of the German army on 4th May, 1945.

Lord Montgomery, now deputy Supreme Allied Commander, is visiting several NATO countries for the last time before retiring. At Luneburg, he met and talked to detachments of British soldiers from the garrison. With him were general staff officers and personal staff from the second world war, including his former tank driver in Africa, Sqdn. Sgt. Major J. Fraser, BFM, MM.

Monty paid especial attention to the 15-ton stone victory monument and said he would very much like it to be transferred to England and was satisfied that it could be done. It would be particularly interesting, he said, to young soldiers at Sandhurst, Britain's military academy, and if the German army took over at Luneburg in the near future, they might well allow its transfer.
