Background: A study group from the Association of African Central Banks ended a three-day meeting on monetary policy in Addis, capital of Ethiopia, on Wednesday (October 31st). The main topic was co-operation on monetary policy in dealings with the industrialised countries.

The banking study group was comprised of two representatives from the four regional sub-committees, and met under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). They discussed the financial decisions taken by the Summit Conference of the Organisation of African Unity held in Addis Ababa in June, and was to implement these decisions. The main points were the drawing up of a monetary policy to offset the adverse effects on Africa of currency fluctuations abroad, and the initiation of a co-operative policy among African countries to safeguard their economic interests.
