Background: Arriving from Iraq on a five-day visit to India, East German Prime Minister Dr. Otto Grotewohl was filmed by Visnews at Palam Airport, Delhi, Jan 12.
Dr. Grotewohl - heading a delegation of the East German government and on a tour of the Middle and Far East - was welcomed by a special reception committee including India's Defence Minister Krishna Menon, Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Dr. Keskar, the Foreign Secretary S. Dutt and the Mayor of Delhi, Mrs. Asaf Ali.
A formal state reception would have been against the protocol since the East German regime is not recognised by the Indian Government.
Accompanied by Mrs. Grotewohl, East German Foreign Minister Dr. Bolz and Communist Party members, Dr. Grotewohl received bouquets and garlands from Delhi schoolgirls.
From the airport the East German delegation proceeded to the Raj Ghat where the East German Premier placed a wreath at the memorial for Mahatma Gandhi.
Later he called on Indian PM Nehru for talks at his office.
