Background: Mr. Maurice Strong, the United Nations Secretary for Environment, arrived in Abidjan yesterday (June 25) from Addis Ababa. In Abidjan he is due to hold discussions on the next U.N. Environment Conference, to be held in Stockholm next year. He is at present on an official tour of African states.
SYNOPSIS: The Ivory Coast, Friday....and the arrival in Abidjan of Mr. Maurice Strong, the United Nations Secretary for the Environment. Mr. Strong, who is on a tour of African states, was greeted by Mr. Karl Englund, resident representative of the U.N. Development Programme.
Mr. Strong was in Abidjan to hold talks with leading officials on the next U.N. Environment Conference, to be held in Stockholm, Sweden, next year. He will collect suggestions for topics to be discussed at the Conference, which Ivory Coast delegates will attend. Earlier, he held similar talks with African leaders attending the Organization of African Unity summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Mr. Strong, who has already visited Togo and Nigeria as well as Ethiopia, leaves the Ivory Coast for Guinea on Tuesday.
