Background: The annual pre-Lenten Carnival celebrations are under way in Nice, where a large parade was held yesterday (Sunday). This year the theme of the parade was the "New Continent" (The Americas) and featured 17 large gaily-decorated floats depicting various aspects of life in the various regions. Large crowds watched the two-hour procession, which also included folkloric dancing and singing. The film has good background sound.
SYNOPSIS: The Carnival of Nice is in its eight-seventh year--but the huge masked figures have lost none of their zest and novelty. The great pre-Lenten festival of costumes and parties takes place all over the world in Roman Catholic countries--with Nice and Rio de Janeiro the most famous and elaborate of all. This year's Nice Carnival is based on the theme "New World--The America"--and the seventeen allegorical floats depict scenes of life, history and folklore from Alaska to Patagonia.
Some of the mannequins are caricatures of well-known personalities and events in which they participated--here a group of Cuban revolutionaries are followed by Fidel Castro.
Miami's Marineland was represented by smiling porpoises.
The crowd was obviously enjoying every minute of the parade as it would its way through the wide avenues of the famous Cote d'Azur seaside resort.
Some allegories were satirical--such as this one depicting New York.
A band of young mini-skirted girl cadets show their paces--to the enjoyment of the crowds, including several british sailors.
From all over the world--thousands of participants and viewers converge on Nice, and almost none are disappointed.
