Background: In Cyprus, there were three explosions at the weekend (11-12 August 1973) damaging property belonging to rival supporters of the Government and the Eoka movement, which demands union with Greece. In Nicosia, the Eoka Union Club was raked with bullets and a car belonging to the general secretary of the pro-Greek S.E.K. (Cyprus Workers Confederation) Trade Union was bombed. Outside the capital, in the village of Omodos, the house of the secondary school headmaster was burnt down, apparently by supporters of General Grivas.

The violence came in the wake of a Government statement that they had uncovered an "Eoka B" movement plot against the life of President Makarios and a plan to sieze power. The underground organisation, successor to the original Eoka movement founded by General George Grivas in 1955 to oust the British from the island, denied the allegations.

SYNOPSIS: In Cyprus at the weekend, there was more violence between rival supporters of the Government and of the Eoka movement, which favours union with Greece. a Nicosia Eoka Club came under gun fire.

The attack appeared to be in reaction to a Government statement the Eoka had been planning to kill President Makarios sieze power. Eoka denied the charges.

The headmaster of the village secondary school, a known supporter of the Government, lived in the house, which belonged to the church. Petrol was poured on it and the building was set alight. All furniture and other contents were destroyed.

The third act of violence of the weekend was directed against the S.E.K. Trade Union, which favours the Greek Government. A bomb was planted in the parked car of the Union's general secretary, wrecking the vehicle entirely. Here, too, no-one was hurt.
