SYNOPSIS: In Sao Paulo, on Wednesday, Brazilian sta??? Thomas Koch suffered a surprise set-back on the closing day of the Avis Cup Inter-Zone final. Koch -- who had been on the winning side in both his previous singles and doubles matches -- was out powered by Rumania's Ilie Nastasie.
With Brazil holding a 2-1 matches lead victory for Koch would have been enough to decide the series. But it was not to be Nastasie dropped his service only once.
Nastasie, leading 7-6 in the third st serves to win the match. His crowding net play proved too much for Koch and the Rumanian ran out winner 6-4, 6-0, 8-6. With the scores level at two matches each the outcome of the tie rested on the final singles.
But the home crowd had little to shout about. Brazilian Edison Mandarin dropped every game in the first set against Rumania's Ion Tiriac. Tiriac's crisp volleying and vicious forehand return of service never allowed his opponent to break into him game.
Tiriac seemed less disturbed than his Brazilian opponent by the noise of jet planes from the nearby Congon has airport. And although Mandarin fought all the way to salvage the crucial third set, Tiriac clinched the match and tie 6-0, 6-2, 6-4. For Rumania -- their second inter-Zone final victory. They now meet Davis Cup holders United States in the Challenge Round at Charlotte, North Carolina in October.
