Background: On the fifth day of his 12-day State visit to France, Soviet Premier Khrushchev visited the Rhone Delta - Pichegru, Nimes, and Arles, Mar 27.

Nimes and Arles, ancient Roman cities, are now strong Communist centres, and the Russian leader was enthusiastically received by cheering crowds. Despite heavy rain and police refusal to allow coach-loads of people to enter Nimes, over 8,000 gave a flag-waving demonstration outside the Prefecture, and twice brought Premier Khrushchev to the balcony.

At Pichegru he saw the pumping station which brings Rhone River water through a network of irrigation canals to the dry soil of Provence; there are 350 miles of main canals, and 5,000 miles of secondary ditching. Premier Khrushchev looked at maize grown in the region, but doubted whether Russia would buy local products; he gave his judgement with the inevitable Russian proverb; "you don't take your own Samovar to Tula". ("You needn't buy what you can produce yourself".)
The Russian Premier saw his second Roman Amphitheatre of the day at Arles, where he was also entertained by dancers in picturesque local costume. Again, heavy rain slightly marred the occasion.

Later, Premier Khrushchev's motorcade continued to the escort city of Marseilles, 60 miles away.

This is proving an exhaustive tour, and Premier Khrushchev - who asked the authorities to make it rather easier - has occasionally seemed rather subdued. But observers felt that his spirits were raised by their warm reception in the "red" south.
