Background: The West German Ambassador to Ethiopia, Baron herbert von Stackelberg, on Saturday (14 September) handed over 21 trucks and another 20 trailers to assist the country's drought relief and rehabilitation programme. The gift was worth 1.3 million Ethiopian dollars (GBP 260,000 sterling) and brought the total value of value of West German drought aid to 17 million Ethiopia dollars (GBP 3.5 million sterling).

Private West German organisations, including the Magazine Stern and the Churches, have raises and additional 24 million Ethiopian dollars (GBP 5 million sterling).

One of the major problems facing the Ethiopian drought relief programme is a shortage of transport, and the West German gift will facilitate the movement of supplies to the worst-hit areas.

It has been estimated that the devastating drought and famine killed at least 100,000 people. The political implications of the drought contributed to the downfall of Emperor Haile Selassie and his Government. The Armed Forces accused scores of the country's former leaders of negligence and with having consciously tried to cover up the extent of the drought.
