Background: Santa Claus was on his way with a big present for the British troops in Cyprus when 20 soldier's wives and 45 children were taken by a chartered DC-6-B of Eagle Airways to trouble island Dec 23.
The Christmas surprise party boarded the plane at Blackbushe airport, 30 miles west of London. During the nine hour flight the children received gifts from Father Christmas and joined an RAF padre in carol singing before they snuggled down for a comfortable night's rest.
At Nicosia airport their fathers were waiting to meet them as the DC-6-B touched down. Wives and children were warmly welcomed and happily reunited families now look forward to a Merry Christmas.
