Background: At the end of the first day's play in the vital fourth test match between the West Indies and Australia, the West Indian players had survived a fierce Australian pace onslaught in an incident-packed day of cricket. Though they survived the Australian attack, several of the West Indian players were battered and bruised by the close of play.

The visitors left an overnight score of 286 runs for the loss of six wickets, but they had also lost the batting services of make-shift opener, Bernard Julien, who had to leave the field with a fractured right thumb.

Julien and Captain Clive Lloyd both fell victims to bowler Jeff Thomson. Lloyd later returned to the field after recovering from a sharply rising delivery which hit him on the left side of his face.

The Australian captain, Greg Chappell, again gambled on sending in the opposition after calling the toss correctly for the third time in succession. But honours were even at the end of the day.

Though the Australian bowling was obviously effective - in every sense of the word - it was not at full strength owing to the absence of their opening fast blower, Dennis Lillee. He had been rules medically unfit because of a virus infection which had spread overnight from him chest to his back.

The West Indians had fallen back on their winning second test team, which included four pace bowlers. Vanburn Holder was left out, but opening batsman Gordon Greenidge was named as twelfth man. Julien and Roy Fredericks opened the innings.

SYNOPSIS: The West Indies were soon in trouble on the opening day of the fourth cricket test against Australia in Sydney on Saturday. Alvin Kallicharran was caught by Redpath bowled Thomson for nine.

Opener Roy Fredericks gave his side some relief as he attacked the bowling.... particularly salvaging Thomson.

He raced to forty-eight and seemed certain of reaching his fifty in even time.

But Fredericks became Thomson's Second victim when he was well caught by Ian Chappell in slips.

The Chappell brothers combined to dismiss Viv Richards, who had made forty-four valuable runs. He was caught Ian, bowled Greg.

Thomson struck again when one of his bouncers rose sharply to strike West Indian captain Clive Lloyd in the face. Lloyd left the field but later returned to score fifty-one runs.

But the highlights of Thomson's performance was his brilliant catch of Dereyck Murray off the bowling of Max Walker.

Lawrence Rowe became Walker's second wicket as the West Indies battled to 6-286 at the close of play.

Rowe had batted solidly for his sixty-seven runs.
