Background: In Cambodia fighting between the Viet-Cong and Government forces has been going on within 10 miles of the capital, Phnom Penh. South Vietnamese units have also clashed with the Viet-Cong close to the Capital.
On Thursday (June 4) South Vietnamese Army Rangers (ARVN) were advancing in armoured personnel carriers across paddyfields only 13 miles (21 Kms) north-east of Phnom Penh when Viet-Cong guerrillas hidden behind trees opened fire. The Rangers jumped off the carriers and raced towards the treeline, firing as they want. The Viet-Cong fell back.
As the Rangers entered the village of Prey Tung, which had been in Viet-Cong hands, they came across the body of a guerrilla killed in the action.
The villagers, fearing they were to be shot, gave a respectful welcome to the troops. A woman who became very agitated during the fighting gave premature birth to her baby.
The Sough Vietnamese troops found two Viet-Cong suspects in the village and they were tied up for questioning.
