TRANSCRIPT: DR. CHRIS BERNARD: "WE REALISED THAT THE DONOR WOULD PROBABLY HAVE TO BE THE ??? OF A MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT. AFTER INVESTIGATING A FEW DONORS, DR. ??? ... WHO DID THE MATCHING AND THE BLOOD GROUPING DECIDED THAT A YOUNG WOMAN OF 23, SERIOUSLY INJURED IN A MOTOR CAR ACCIDENT WOULD BE THE BEST DONOR. WHEN SHE DIED SHE WAS PUT ON THE HEART-LUNG MACHINE AND THEN THE HEART WAS REMOVED. WHEN WE FOUND THAT THE HEART WAS SUITABLE, THE PATIENT WAS ALSO PUT ON THE HEART-LUNG MACHINE AND HIS HEART WAS TAKEN OUT AND HER HEART WAS THEN TRANSPLANTED. I THINK A CHEER WENT UP IN THE OPERATING THEATRE WHEN WE HAVE THE HEART A SHOCK AND IT STARTED. IT TOOK OVER VERY WELL MAINTAINING A GOOD BLOOD PRESSURE AND A GOOD CIRCULATION FOR THE PATIENT AND AFTER ANOTHER HOUR THE PATIENT WAS BACK IN THE WARD AWAKE... ThE PACEMAKER GOING ON ITS OWN AND SO FAR DOING VERY WELL."

QUESTION: "HOW LONG DID THE HEART STOP?"

DOCTOR: "THE HEART WAS STOPPED FOR APPROXIMATELY THREE AND A HALF HOURS BEFORE WE RESTARTED IT AGAIN."

QUESTION: "AND THERE WAS NO PROBLEM IN RESTARTING IT WITH AN ELECTRIC SHOCK?"

DOCTOR: "THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AS WE PROTECTED THE HEART ??? SUFFUSING IT THROUGHOUT THE OPERATION WITH BLOOD ??? THE HEART-LUNG MACHINE."

Background: THE SOUTH AFRICAN PATIENT WHO WAS LAST SUNDAY (DECEMBER 3) GIVEN A NEW HEART IS A DIABETIC. ThIS WAS CONFIRMED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) BY THE DOCTORS AT THE GROOTE SCHUUR HOSPITAL IN CAPE TOWN WHERE THE HISTORIC FIVE-HOUR OPERATION WAS PERFORMED ON 56-YEAR-OLD LOUIS WASHKANSKY.

DOCTORS SAID THAT MR WASHKANSKY WAS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) ENTERING THE CRUCIAL SEVEN-DAY PERIOD IN WHICH HIS BODY MUST ACCEPT THE HEART TRANSPLANTED FROM A YOUNG WOMAN ROAD CRASH VICTIM. SO FAR THERE HAS BEEN NO SIGN THAT HIS BODY TISSUES WILL REJECT THE REPLACEMENT HE'S TRANSFERRED FROM 23-YEAR-OLD MISS DENISE DARVALL AFTER HER DEATH.

LATE LAST NIGHT A HOSPITAL BULLETIN SAID MR WASHKANSKY WAS MAKING GOOD PROGRESS, BUT DOCTORS FEAR THAT HIS DIABETIC CONDITION COULD ADVERSELY AFFECT HIS CHANCES OF SURVIVAL. YESTERDAY THE PATIENT ATE HIS FIRST SOLID FOOD SINCE THE OPERATION -- A SOFT BOILED EGG.

DR CHRIS BARNARD, WHO LED THE TEAM OF SURGEONS, SAID:
