    Background: GULF OF SIAM, THAILAND

In an effort to stop piracy in the Gulf of Siam, the Thai government has set up special patrols to protect the fishing fleet from robbery on the open sea. Piracy is rife in the Gulf of Siam. Small cargo vessels, Vietnamese refugees boats and Thai fishing trawlers are easy pray for the sea bandits who haunt the islands and a tolls off the Thai coast. One of the chief priorities of the Thai Navy is to protect the refugees escaping from Vietnam. Many refugee women are known to have been captured by the pirates and taken to islands where they have been held for up to four months and sexually assaulted by their captors. By increasing their patrols, the Thai Navy claims to have effectively put a stop to these practices and with increased aid from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, they hope soon to wipe out piracy in the region completely.
