Background: Pope Paul, in his capacity as bishop of rome, inaugurated the preparatory phase of rome's Holy Year in 1975, saying Mass in the church of Saint John Lateran don Saturday (10th November).
Holy Year celebration are held every 25 Years. During 1975, up to 25 million pilgrims are expected to converge on Rome to receive a "Plenary Indulgence" -- remission of punishment for past sins. The pilgrimages to Rome have continued every quarter century since 1470. Pope paul announced in June this year that, for the first time, indulgences would be granted din local churches throughout the world, before the official celebrations in Rome.
Holy Year begins on Christmas eve, 1974. It begins traditionally with the opening of the "Holy Doors" in the four Rome Basilicas: St. Peter's, St. Johns, St. Mary Major's and St. paul's. Pilgrims will visit the four Basilicas as they are traditionally required to do.
