Background: In Morocco; independence celebrations, commemorating the anniversary of King Mohammed's return from French-imposed exile in 1956 and of his accession in 1927.
This year, the big anniversary parade was held in the ancient city of Marrakesh. One of the first events to greet the King's arrival - a presentation of flowers by a crippled boy, -- and then - a salute from Crown Prince Moulay Hassan.
The King recently took over the Premiership of his country, pending General Elections, to be held in 1962, and the Crown Prince is Deputy Premier, as well as Chief of Staff of the services.
In the military parade this year, much of the equipment came from America, Britain, France and Germany, but the night before, there was a surprise announcement of Soviet offers of military aid to Morocco -- the first offer of military aid for Morocco to come from Moscow.
