    SPEECH ON FILM (TRANSCRIPT)

POPE (SEQ. 5): "Dear Brothers, it is always a pleasure for me to meet the members of the Moslem communities during all my journeys, and to give them my personal greetings and those of all their Christian brothers and sisters throughout the world."

    SPEECH ON FILM (TRANSCRIPT)

POPE (SEQ. 8): "There are, in today's world, too many situations of injustice. Injustice reigns when some nations accumulate riches and live in abundance, when other nations cannot offer the majority of people the basic necessities. Injustice reigns, when, within the same society, some groups hold most of the wealth and power, while large strata of the population cannot essentially provide for the livelihood of their families."

    Background: INTRODUCTION:
On the fourth day of his visit to the Philippines, Pope John Paul has been meeting Moslem representatives on the troubled island of Mindanao. He has also been seeing the plight of the poor on the sugar-growing island of Negros. His trip is proving as extensive as his earlier visits to other countries.

SYNOPSIS: Security was tight for the Pope's visit to Mindanao, the scene of recent bitter fighting between Government troops and Moslem rebels. One-hundred-and-twenty-four troops were killed by suspected rebels in one incident last week. But church leaders say there have been many abuses by the army. Crowds welcomed the Pontiff, cheering him on his drive from the airport.

Later he met Moslem leaders and was presented with a list of grievances. He urged them to work with the country's Christians for a harmonious future.

On the sugar island of Negros, the Pope had a different message.
