Background: Demonstrators clashed violently in the streets of Rome, and burned drawings of Greek President George papadopeules in Nicosia, in protest against the proclamation of martial law in Greece.

In Rome, rival groups of Conservative and Socialist students clashed violently on Monday (19 November). Three policemen and several students were injured. Scores of police were called in to Rome University to central scuffles between militant groups of students chanting slogans and staging demonstrations. Some of the demonstrations supported the Greek Government's stand. At naples University, police said about 200 students, many of them greek, staged a sit-in, but there were no violent incidents.

In Nicosia on Wednesday (21st November) the Cyprus Democratic party led a march through the city's streets. Demonstrators gathered in Bayraktar Square, and, led by the Party's Vice President, Doctor Takis Hatjidemetriou, made their way through the city chanting slogans and carrying banners. At the end of the demonstration, banners bering the likeness of president papadopolous were burned. There were no violent incidents.

Officially, about II people are said to have died since Saturday (17th November), following violent clashes in Athens between students and troops. The Greek Opposition, however, said the figure was at least 400, and claimed more than 3,000 were detained in Athens Sports Stadium. Martial law was declared in Greece following demonstrations by students, sparked off by government regulations on student voting.
