Background: Two leading Spanish Communists were released from a Madrid prison on Wednesday (4 August) under the terms of a partial amnesty which became law earlier in the day.

SYNOPSIS: The released men were Senor Simon Sanchez Montero, a member of the Communist Party's Central Committee, and Senor Santiago Alvarez, Secretary-General of the Communist Party of Galicia in northwest Spain. The two men had been arrested earlier this year and were awaiting trial They were greeted outside Madrid's Carabanchel prison by a small crowd of relatives and political supporters.

One of the prisoners Senor Montero, had spent a total of 15 years in jail and he told the crowd he owed his release to them. The two men were set free following the publication of a royal decree declaring amnesty for those prisoners jailed for distributing anti-government propaganda and for belonging to left-wing parties.

Although riot police gathered nearby, the crowd was allowed to continue its demonstration. Demonstrators raised their hands in the clenched-fist salute of the Communist Party and chanted slogans.
