Background: Another success was recorded by the United States in the field of inter-continental ballistic missiles, Feb 1, when they sent the solid fuel missile Minuteman 4,200-miles down the Atlantic range from Cape Canaveral. All three stages fired as planned and the nose cone packed with instruments was right on target.

One-fourth as costly to make as the liquid fuel Titan and Atlas rockets the Minuteman will be more dependable, mobile and easier to launch. The development of this missile is now thought to be two years ahead of schedule.

Only 58ft long the Minuteman can be launched from mobile pads mounted on railway trucks or river barges. This major advance by the West in the development of solid fuel rocket is considered to have closed the gap between the United States and U.S.S.R.
