Background: A CROWD OF 200,000 LAOTIANS FROM VARIOUS PROVINCES, GATHERED OUTSIDE A BUDDHIST PAGODA IN VIENTIANE, THE LAOTIAN CAPITAL LAST WEEK FOR THE THAT LUANG FAIR, WHICH IS AN ANNUAL EVENT AND THE BIGGEST OF ALL THE FAIRS IN THE COUNTRY.

BEFORE DECLARING IT OPEN, THE LAOTIAN KING AND QUEEN; THE CROWN PRINCE AND PRINCESS AND OTHER HIGH RANKING GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS PARTICIPATED IN A RELIGIOUS PROCESSION IN WHICH PALANQUINS WERE CARRIED INTO THE PAGODA WHERE PRAYERS WERE SAID.

IT IS CUSTOMARY FOR LAOTIANS TO MAKE OFFERINGS TO BUDDHIST MONKS ON ANY BIG OCCASION, AND AS THIS FAIR IS THE BIGGEST, MANY GIFTS WERE GIVEN TO THE MONKS. THESE OFFERINGS WERE LATER DISTRIBUTED TO THE POOR.

THE KING AND QUEEN LATER PROCEEDED TO A ROYAL PAVILION FROM WHERE THEY WERE ENTERTAINED TO SCOTTISH MUSIC AND DANCES PERFORMED BY BRITISH TROOPS OF THE ARGYLL AND SOUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS. THEY WERE FLOW TO LAOS FROM SINGAPORE, MALAYSIA, SPECIALLY FOR THE OCCASION.

MEMBERS OF THE BRITISH MILITARY TRAINING SCHOOL, ALSO FROM SINGAPORE, WERE THERE TO DEMONSTRATE GYMNASTICS AND TRAMPOLINE JUMPING. THESE PERFORMANCES HAD A SPECIAL CAMP TO STAY IN DURING THEIR VISIT TO LAOS.

FOR MOST OF THE CHILDREN WHO GATHERED AROUND THE CAMP TO SEE THESE PERFORMANCES, THE TRAMPOLINISTS WERE THE MAIN ATTRACTION.
